How You Can Help – like Actually Make a Difference – during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Making the Most Out of an Awareness Month

Every month it feels like we are bombarded with messages about this cause or that event that is trying to raise awareness. In fact, it seems like just about every single day is a “national day” of something or other (today happens to be National Ampersand Day for anyone who is interested).

Obviously some of these days and months that are highlighted are more style than substance; nevertheless, people and businesses have a way of promoting them everywhere. I am not sure when all these “awareness” months started or who gets to make the ultimate decision, but it seems like some important causes and messages can get lost in all the clutter. With that in mind, here are some ideas for how you can take advantage of the fact that September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and promote awareness, as well as action.

Be Informed

Last week in the blog we told you about a campaign by the Prostate Cancer Foundation called, “Step Up.” What do they recommend? Get informed and tell everyone you know about prostate cancer. Share real facts.

  • A man will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every 3 minutes.
  • African American men are 2.4 times more likely to die of prostate cancer than Caucasian men.
  • Prostate cancer is 100% treatable if detected early.

On their website, you can sign up to receive more facts and information about prostate cancer and their mission to fund a cure. Being informed can make all the difference when you end up in a conversation with a friend or family member. In fact, it just might save a life.

Talk About It

OK, so now that you are informed, it’s important that you make some noise and actually talk about prostate cancer. Unfortunately, an article published in Newsweek earlier this month reported that only about 7 percent of men surveyed said they would be willingly to discuss their personal health with male friends. That isn’t very many.

Come on fellas, you can do better.

And ladies, you need to encourage your men to talk about it and share what you know too.

Post facts on Twitter. Share articles like this one that highlights a partnership with the NFL for prostate cancer awareness that will run a series of public service announcements or this one that highlights a campaign for breweries to use special bottle caps to promote discussions about prostate cancer on Facebook. You may not feel comfortable talking about your own health, but apparently if you can talk about football and beer, than you can talk about prostate cancer this month. The important thing is that you are talking.

Fund a Cure

During the month of September there are more opportunities than ever to donate money to help fund research for innovative treatments and cure for prostate cancer. Not only that, but similar to the sea of pink we see in October for breast cancer awareness, several companies have stepped up in September with blue products for prostate cancer. For example, Lands End will donate 10% of net proceeds from selected items to help fund prostate cancer research. Every dollar makes a difference.

Do Something

No matter what you find yourself doing this month, take a little time to figure out a way you could talk about prostate cancer in your own way and do your part to raise a little but more awareness.

If you are a runner – run a 5K for prostate cancer.

If you are a parent, share stats with your children.

If you are a beer drinker, drink a Pint for Prostate Cancer making sure to post a picture or comment to your favorite social media outlet with the hash tags #crownsforacure and #prostatecancerawareness.

And if you are a writer, then by all means, write about it – and just for today, maybe work in an extra ampersand or two.
