Central Ohio Urology Group Partners with HIFU Prostate Services to Offer Non-Invasive HIFU Treatment for Localized Prostate Cancer

Large urology practice in Ohio region joins the HIFU Prostate Services Network to increase availability of HIFU in Columbus

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 10, 2018 — HIFU Prostate Services, LLC, the leading provider of HIFU technology to physician practices in the United States, is pleased to announce it has partnered with Central Ohio Urology Group, one of the premier Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA) members in the Midwest and a top tier provider of urologic services in Ohio. Through this partnership, HIFU with the Sonablate as a treatment option for localized prostate cancer will become more available to men in Ohio.

“Men facing localized prostate cancer deserve to have access to lots of different treatment options. We have followed HIFU for a long time and believe it will gain further market adoption at Central Ohio Urology Group,” said Mark Cherney, executive chairman & chief executive officer at Central Ohio Urology Group. “We strive to be leaders in urology and treating prostate cancer and always want to be at the forefront of revolutionary technology like HIFU.”

HIFU, or high intensity focused ultrasound, is a treatment that uses sound waves to heat, and destroy, tissue in the prostate. There is no cutting, no incision and no blood loss. It is a one-time procedure that allows men to return home the same day and get back to their normal lifestyle within a few days, with significantly lower rates of impotence and incontinence as seen with surgery or radiation treatment for prostate cancer.

“More men we see are diagnosed early and have localized disease. HIFU gives them a wonderful treatment option that can eradicate the cancer in their prostate and minimize the complications they have after the procedure,” said Rush Patel, MD. “With HIFU patients, we see very little incontinence or erectile dysfunction.”

HIFU was cleared by the FDA in October 2015 for the ablation of prostatic tissue. Last summer, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Medicare code that may help patients cover part of the cost of the HIFU procedure.

“Central Ohio Urology Group is the largest urology group in the greater Columbus area and a leading LUGPA group in the nation. HPS is delighted to partner with them to increase utilization of the Sonablate HIFU technology to treat patients with localized prostate cancer” said Jenny Robeson, chief sales officer, HIFU Prostate Services. “We look forward to helping them expand their HIFU program to make HIFU available to more patients across the state.”

HIFU may be repeated, if necessary, and can be used to treat patients that have failed radiation therapy. It does not preclude any future treatments including surgery or radiation.
