Dr. Vora talks HIFu on WMAR

It has been commonly accepted that prostate cancer occurs more frequently as men age into their 70s or 80s. However, recent research has shown that younger men are being diagnosed at an increasing rate. In fact, the number of younger men diagnosed with aggressive, life-threatening prostate cancer has increased nearly 6-fold in the last 20 years.

Dr. Vora of Chesapeake Urology Associates is a noted urologist, specializing in the treatment of bladder cancer, kidney cancer , and prostate cancer.  Dr. Vora has adopted new techniques to not only screen for the disease, but to treat it in a less invasive matter than traditional surgeries, which can leave men incontinent and greatly affect  quality of life.

Dr. Vora is one of the few surgeons in the country trained in HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound), a new robotics-based device using focused sound waves to heat and destroy cancerous tissue in the prostate. In development for several years, HIFU offers hope where traditional methods have left men scarred physically and mentally.
